Shopify App Store index

Shopify App Store index

The Shopify App Store Index (SASI) shows you exactly how visible your app is to potential customers, whether they’re browsing categories or searching for specific solutions. Think of it as your App Store performance dashboard - tracking everything from where you rank in search results to how your reviews affect your discoverability.

What makes this report different

While Shopify’s Partner Dashboard shows basic metrics like views and installs, SASI connects you to the factors that drive those numbers. Instead of wondering why your traffic changes, you’ll see exactly how your app’s visibility shifts across categories and search terms. More importantly, you’ll understand how your marketing efforts and customer satisfaction directly impact your App Store presence.

Report components

Category rankings

The first visualization tracks your app’s position in every category where you’re listed. This isn’t just about where you appear - it’s about understanding how visible you are to merchants browsing for solutions. Each line represents a different category, showing you:

  • Daily position changes: Track your app’s movement within each category. Quick drops might signal competitor updates, while steady climbs validate your optimization efforts.
  • Visibility trends: Monitor long-term ranking patterns across categories. Understanding seasonal shifts helps you time updates for maximum impact.
  • Movement alerts: Spot sudden ranking changes that need attention. Early detection means faster response to both opportunities and threats.
  • Category correlation: See how improvements in one category affect others. When updates boost multiple rankings, you’ve found messaging worth expanding.

Remember: These categories are either assigned by Shopify or ones you’ve opted into. Your position in them directly affects how easily merchants can find you while browsing.

Keyword performance

The keyword tracking section reveals how discoverable you are when merchants search for specific terms. For each keyword you track:

  • Position tracking: Monitor daily ranking changes for each term. Connect ranking improvements to specific listing updates and optimization efforts.
  • Trend analysis: Spot patterns in search visibility over time. Use these insights to guide content updates and feature promotion timing.
  • Search term management: Track up to 10 terms simultaneously. Rotate terms strategically to expand your understanding of market opportunities.
  • Performance comparison: Compare ranking stability across different terms. Identify which features and benefits consistently drive strong search presence.
  • Discovery optimization: Add or remove terms based on actual merchant behavior. When Traffic Source Attribution reveals valuable terms, add them to your tracking instantly.

💡 Pro tip: Found a search term driving traffic in your Traffic Source Attribution report? Click it to instantly add it to your SASI tracking. No more guessing which keywords matter - let your actual traffic guide your monitoring.

Review metrics

Two crucial visualizations show how merchant feedback affects your visibility:

  1. Review count
    • Track review accumulation: Monitor both daily additions and overall growth. Sudden spikes often signal successful customer engagement initiatives.
    • Watch review velocity: See how quickly you’re gathering feedback. Slowing velocity can warn of engagement issues before they affect rankings.
    • Compare historical patterns: Spot seasonal trends in review activity to time your feedback requests effectively.
    • Measure campaign impact: Track how customer outreach efforts translate into actionable feedback.
  2. App Store rating
    • Monitor rating stability: Identify periods of rating volatility that could affect rankings. Quick responses can minimize negative impacts.
    • Track sentiment shifts: Spot trends in rating changes that might signal product or support issues needing attention.
    • Compare competitive position: Understand how your rating trends against category averages for context.
    • Predict ranking impacts: See how rating changes historically affect your category and search positions.

Understanding your numbers

Daily tracking

The App Store responds quickly to changes, which is why SASI updates daily. This granular tracking helps you:

  • Track listing impact: See how copy changes and feature updates affect rankings within 24 hours. Quick feedback lets you iterate faster.
  • Spot early warnings: Identify negative trends before they significantly impact visibility. Early detection means faster response.
  • Validate changes: Measure how optimization efforts affect rankings across different categories and terms. Clear data guides future improvements.
  • Monitor competition: Track sudden ranking changes that might signal competitor updates or new market entrants.

Reading the patterns

Every change in ranking tells a story:

  • Spot optimization wins: Sudden ranking improvements often show which listing changes resonate most. Build on what works.
  • Identify issues early: Gradual ranking declines might signal outdated content or emerging competitive threats. Address problems while they’re small.
  • Connect review impact: Rating changes usually affect rankings within days. Understanding this delay helps time your response efforts.
  • Track seasonal shifts: Identify when category rankings naturally fluctuate. Plan updates and campaigns around these patterns.

Making the most of SASI

For marketing teams

SASI becomes your feedback loop for App Store optimization:

  1. Track listing update impact See how description updates and feature highlights affect your rankings. When rankings jump after showcasing a new feature, you’ve found messaging worth spreading.
  2. Identify high-value keywords Use Traffic source attribution data to spot terms driving conversions. When specific feature searches bring paying customers, optimize your listing around these proven winners.
  3. Measure campaign effectiveness Watch how marketing pushes affect organic discovery. Rising category rankings after campaigns show their true impact beyond direct traffic.
  4. Guide content strategy Use ranking data to choose content focus. When certain terms consistently rank well, you’ve found themes worth emphasizing across all channels.

For customer experience teams

Turn customer satisfaction into improved visibility:

  1. Review impact tracking Connect review acquisition to ranking changes. When rankings improve after positive reviews, you’re seeing the business impact of customer satisfaction.
  2. Rating trend analysis Track how rating changes affect visibility. Use ranking gains to justify customer experience investments with clear metrics.
  3. Review velocity monitoring Spot review pace changes early. When frequency drops, you have time to adjust engagement strategies before visibility suffers.
  4. Sentiment impact assessment See how sentiment affects rankings. When positive reviews mentioning specific features boost rankings, you’ve found development priorities.

Pro tips

Level up your App Store optimization with these strategies:

  1. Strategic keyword management
    • Start with proven traffic drivers: Focus on terms already bringing paying customers. Optimize for searches that generate revenue, not just traffic.
    • Expand your keyword universe: Rotate out low performers for new opportunities. Test emerging terms to find untapped ranking potential.
    • Monitor market position: Track competitor-related searches to find your comparative advantages and marketing angles.
    • Leverage seasonal patterns: Identify seasonal search trends and prepare listing updates before peak periods.
    • Connect rankings to revenue: Focus on terms with high conversion rates. Not all top rankings deliver equal value.
  2. Category position optimization
    • Track algorithm sensitivity: Find categories that respond quickly to updates. These are your best optimization opportunities.
    • Map seasonal flows: Know when merchants shop each category to time your optimization efforts.
    • Measure feature impact: Watch how launches affect category rankings to spot new opportunities.
    • Identify quick wins: Target categories where small ranking improvements drive big visibility gains.
  3. Review strategy development
    • Time your review requests: Ask for feedback when it has maximum ranking impact.
    • Prioritize response efforts: Match response speed to ranking benefits.
    • Learn from feedback patterns: Identify which review types boost rankings most.
    • Build systematic approaches: Focus on customers whose feedback historically improves rankings.

Remember: While Shopify’s ranking algorithm remains largely unknown, SASI gives you observable signals to guide your optimization efforts. It’s not about gaming the system - it’s about understanding how merchants find you and making sure you’re visible where it matters most.

FAQ

Why is my category missing from my app in SASI?

SASI is only able to currently scrape the first 10 pages of a category in the App Store, so if you're listed beyond those pages, your app won't show in SASI.

Why can't I find my app in keyword searches?

SASI currently only looks at the first two pages of search results for each keyword. If your app ranks beyond these pages for a particular keyword, it won't appear in the report.

Why are some categories fully missing?

Due to recent changes on the Shopify App Store, certain pages are now harder to crawl than before. If you see a missing category, it either hasn't been crawled yet due to it being brand new, or it's a select category that is now not set up like the rest.

Does SASI work with all App Store languages?

Currently, SASI only supports English-language listings. The Shopify App Store is localized, which means keywords and categories can differ between languages, but we're currently focused on English market data only.

Why do my rankings look different in other countries?

The Shopify App Store is localized, meaning search results and category rankings can vary between different countries and languages. SASI currently tracks the English-language version only.
